An affiliate is a company we own or control, a company that owns or controls us, or a company that is owned or controlled by the same company that owns or controls us. Ownership does not mean complete ownership, but means owning enough to have control.

A nonaffiliated third party is a company that is not an affiliate of ours.

How You May Opt Out or Tell Us Not to Share This Information with Our Affiliates    or Companies

Federal law gives you the right to limit how we use Customer Information about you in two ways.

2.  The Affiliate Marketing Opt-out
You may request us not to share Customer Information about you among our Affiliates that could be used to market products and services to you.

If you choose either of these opt-out rights, we will treat it as if you have chosen both the Affiliate Sharing Opt-out and the Affiliate Marketing Opt-out, and you will not receive information about products and services that may interest you.

For accounts that are held jointly with BankEast, either of the joint account owners may opt out.  We will treat an opt-out request by one joint account holder as a request for all joint account holders.

What to do if you are a victim of Identity Theft

If you are concerned that someone has unauthorized access to your personal information, please call us immediately at (865) 540-5800 so we can take steps to help protect you.

Place a “Fraud Alert” on your credit reports and review the reports carefully.  The alert tells creditors to follow certain procedures before they open new accounts in your name or make changes to your existing accounts.  The three nationwide consumer-reporting companies have toll-free numbers for placing an initial 90-day fraud alert.  A call to one of the following is sufficient:

            Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
            Experian: 1-800-397-3742
            TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289

Placing a Fraud Alert entitles you to free copies of your credit report.

Close any accounts that have been tampered with or established fraudulently.
Call the security or fraud departments of each company where an account was opened or changed without your consent.  Follow up in writing with copies of supporting documents.

Ask for verification that the disputed account has been closed and the fraudulent debts discharged.

Keep copies of documents and records of your conversations about the theft.

Patriot Act

Important Information About Opening A New Account

To help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, Federal law requires all financial institutions to obtain, verify and record information that identifies each person who opens an account.

What This Means For You

When you open an account, we will ask for your name, address, date of birth and other information that will allow us to identify you. We may also ask to see your drivers license or other identifying documents.

Prevent Identity Theft

Identity theft is a criminal activity where an individual wrongly obtains and uses another person’s personal data without their knowledge and consent to commit fraud.

  • No one from BankEast will ever telephone you and request your account number, PIN, or passcode. If you receive such a call, please notify us immediately.
  • Do not provide your personal information to telephone callers, over the Internet or through the mail.
  • Never leave your checkbook, wallet or other financial information unprotected.
  • Do not use an unsecured mailbox to send or receive mail. Use an official U.S. Postal Service collection box.
  • Have your mail held by the U.S. Postal Service if you are going out of town.
  • Follow up with vendors if you do not receive statements or bills at the usual time.
  • Carry only the identification and credit or debit cards that you need.
  • Create passwords for your credit cards, telephone accounts and bank accounts.
  • Shred receipts and other documents that contain personal information rather than throwing them away. Shred credit offers and other solicitations that you receive in the mail.
  • Avoid creating passcodes that could be easily determined by others (your birth date, mother’s maiden name, etc).

BankEast helps prevent identity theft by asking appropriate questions to identify a caller, or asking for proper ID when an unknown person is requesting account information.

ATM Security

BankEast has compiled a list of ATM security tips in order to increase awareness and help ensure your safety. Please use the following tips each time you visit an ATM.

  • Memorize your personal identification number (PIN). Do not write it on your card or give it to others.
  • Prepare your transaction before arriving at the ATM.
  • Pay close attention to your surroundings when approaching the ATM and during your transaction. Should you notice anything unusual or suspicious while using the ATM, cancel the transaction, remove your card, and leave the area immediately.
  • Don’t accept assistance from anyone you don’t know while using the ATM.
  • Use your body to shield the view of others while entering your PIN and when retrieving your cash.
  • Remove your card, cash and receipt from the ATM.
  • Wait until you are in secure surroundings to count your cash.
  • If you are approached by someone demanding your money, don’t resist. Try to remember all you can about the incident, then call the police immediately.
  • If you are using a drive-up ATM, keep all car doors locked. All windows, except the driver’s, should be rolled up. Keep the car engine running, and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Record each ATM transaction in your check register for future reference.
  • To help prevent fraud, do not leave your receipt near the ATM. Save your receipt to compare with your bank statement.
  • To report a lost or stolen ATM or debit card, notify us immediately at 865-540-5800 or 1-800-500-1044.
